8/18     Opportunities

8/25     Embrace

9/1       Compassion

9/8       Strive

9/15     Respect

9/22     Fostering

9/29     Integrity

October (The Ghost-Eye Tree)

10/6    dread              …since that dread night at the halfway tree when Ghost-Eye tried to     frighten me.(Walking in the dark is so creepy. I dread going from my house to my neighbor’s without any light.)

10/13  mutter                        You were muttering to yourself. (Please speak clearly, I can’t understand you when you mutter.)

10/20  gasp                We set the bucket down, flopped on the ground, gasping for breath… (Running fast takes my breath away and I have to gasp for air.)

10/27  haunted          …where my hat lay fallen on the haunted ground. (Do ghosts visit this house? Is it haunted?)

November (Julius, the Baby of the World)

11/3    lullaby             And she sang lullabies to him every night.(When I was a baby, my mom would sing me a soft, calming lullaby.)

11/10  insulting         She yelled insulting comments into the crib.(Don’t put me down or insult me with rude remarks!)

11/17  extraordinary We want Julius to grow up as extraordinary as you. (Julius isn’t just your run of the mill, ordinary baby. He’s extraordinary!)

11/24  amused           Lilly’s parents were amused when Julius blew a bubble.(When something fun or interesting happens, I feel amused.)

December (The Paper Bag Princess)

12/1    fiery                Unfortunately, a dragon smashed her castle, burned all her clothes with his fiery breath… (How unfortunate to be scorched by a dragon’s fiery breath!)

12/8    trail                 He was easy to follow because he left a trail of burnt forests and  horses bones. (When Hansel and Gretel went walking in the woods, they left breadcrumbs behind to mark they’d been. They left a trail.)

12/ 15 tangled           Your hair is all tangled and you are wearing a dirty of paper bag. (Sometimes when my grandmother knits, she asks me to untangle her tangled yarn...I have to work hard to straighten out the messy knots.)

January (Fancy Nancy, Bonjour, Butterfly)

1/5      exquisite         Exquisite is even fancier than beautiful. (That ring is like nothing I’ve ever seen. It’s gorgeous! It’s exquisite!)

1/12    iridescent       My wings are bright blue and—what’s that fancy word for shiny?  Oh yes!  Iridescent! (A dragonfly’s wings are so shiny and they look like different colors depending on the light. They’re iridescent.)

1/19    sulk                 For the next two days I scowl and sulk and storm around the house. (When I’m angry or upset with my friend, I sometimes huff and ignore him for awhile. I sulk.)

1/26    ecstatic           I am ecstatic to be here! (If I met my favorite movie star I’d be excited beyond words...I’d be ecstatic!!)

February (Wilma Unlimited)

2/2      limited                        …for a baby who weighed just over four pounds at birth was sure to be limited. (Because I have a cast on my left leg, my ability to walk is limited.)

2/9      remedy           Most babies didn’t have a mother who knew home remedies (I hope they find a remedy for cancer someday.)

2/16    luxury             Doctors were a luxury for the Rudolph family. (We can barely afford this vacation and it’s certainly not something we could do every year. It truly is a luxury to be going to Hawaii.)

2/23    heap                Her sisters and brothers heaped all the family blankets on her. (We piled the leaves in a great big heap after raking them.)

March (The Cow in Apple Time)

3/2      inspires           Something inspires the only cow of late. (My teacher really inspires me to do my best when I see how hard she works every day.)

3/9 and 3/16   scorns  and withering              She scorns a pasture withering to the root. (When I make a bad choice, my dad looks at me with scorn, wrinkling his forehead and frowning.) (In the dry heat of summer, I forgot to water my flowers and I felt so sad as they lay over, withering in the dirt.)

3/30    knoll                She bellows on a knoll against the sky.(My little sister loves to run up and down the little hill or knoll in our back pasture.)

April (Teammates)

4/6      prejudice        Many Americans knew that racial prejudice was wrong.(It’s unwise to suffer from prejudice–to dislike someone or something before giving her/him/it a chance.)

4/13    launch             Branch Rickey launched a search for him. (Before we take off or launch into this lesson, let’s think about what we did yesterday.)

4/20    succeed           If he succeeded, they knew, others would follow. (If you practice running a little every day, you will succeed in running a good field day race.)

4/27    taunt               The taunts and shouting of the fans were ringing in PeeWee’s ears. (It hurts my feelings when people tease or taunt me with mean words.)

May (The Summer My Father Was Ten)

5/4      splatter           Boy, I’d like to see Nicky’s face if I threw a tomato instead of the ball, and he hit it and it splattered all over him.(When I dropped my water balloon on field day, it splattered all over the place!)

5/11    trampled        My father looked at the garden trampled and ruined. (Those poor wild flowers were trampled as the horses ran over them.)

5/18    stammer         “No,” my father stammered. (Feeling confused and not sure what to say, my father stammered, “No.”)
