Lowry Family Update, October 20-24, 2025

Message from Dr. Larkin:

We are looking forward to our Halloween parties and parade next week (Thursday, October 30)! Students will not wear costumes until just before the parade, so please send your child in regular school clothes and pack their costume! Costumes should not be gory, include a weapon, or have a mask that covers the face, as all of our students will be participating in the parade and we do not want to scare anyone! The parade will take place at 2:30 p.m.; families are invited to watch the parade from the sidewalk on Maple Ave. Student pick-up will take place at the normal time and locations.

This year, we are continuing our work with the Black Student Success (BSS) cohort and our partnership with University of Denver. We are one of 5 DPS schools partnering with DU to work on design improvement, specifically around improving our literacy systems. On Friday, we are hosting a design improvement session at Lowry with the leadership teams from the BSS/DU partnership schools. We are excited to learn more from other schools and continue to improve our work around literacy and student learning.

You can learn more about our school systems, including our work with the BSS cohort, by attending our Collaborative School Committee (CSC) meeting on Tuesday, 10/21, 4:30-5:30 p.m. You are welcome to join in-person or virtually. At this week’s meeting, we will be discussing Title 1, current student enrollment, a review of our Universal Improvement Plan (UIP), and student data. There is an opportunity for public input. All parents/guardians of Lowry Elementary are invited to attend the meeting and we encourage you to join us!

What’s Happening at Lowry:

  • Our Book Vending Machine is in use! Each week, one student per grade is randomly selected from the list of students who had perfect attendance the previous week. The selected students get to choose a book to keep! It is such a joy to see their enthusiasm when they find out they are selected and to see their excitement when they choose a book! We will have an opportunity for families to donate books to the vending machine through our Scholastic Book Fair in November.

  • The PTO appreciates the enormous support they are receiving from our Lowry families. They recognize that October has been very busy with events and fundraisers, but each of these provides an opportunity to build community and help the PTO provide meaningful experiences for our students.

Family Activity Corner 🍂 Leaf Collage Creations 🍂

Grab your coats and head outside—it’s time for a leaf hunt! Collect the brightest, crunchiest leaves you can find, then bring them home to turn into art. Arrange your leaves into silly animals, pretty flowers, or even your family’s initials. Add a little glue, and suddenly you’ve got a masterpiece ready for the fridge or front window. Trust us—you’ll be surprised at how much fun a pile of leaves can be!

Helpful tip: Don’t worry if the brightest leaves are gone—fallen ones with different shades and textures make beautiful collages too!
