Message from Dr. Larkin:
For the past two years, Lowry has been part of Denver Public School’s Black Student Success Plan (BSS). As part of our work with BSS, I have the opportunity to learn from a number of educational and business partners throughout the year; later this week, I will be traveling to Oklahoma City to attend sessions with the University of Virginia’s business school. I will be learning with and from other principals from across the nation. Heather Mills and Whitney Adams will attend the BSS conference with me–we are looking forward to sharing our learning with the Lowry staff upon our return!
I hope to see you at Science Night on Thursday, January 22 (5:30-7:00 p.m.). There will be pizza and lemonade (5:30-6:00 p.m.) and two 25-minute sessions (live raptors with Rocky Mountain Wildlife Alliance and dry ice experiments with Cool Science). Please RSVP here. All students must have an adult with them for the duration of the event.
Important Dates:
January 19: No School (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
January 21: Boulevard One Restaurants Dining for Dollars (PTO Fundraiser)
January 22: Science Night, 5:30-7:00 p.m. RSVP here.
January 27: Collaborative School Committee Meeting, 4:30-5:30 p.m. All parents/guardians are invited to attend.
What’s Happening at Lowry:
It may be winter time, but our amazing garden volunteer, Lisa Davis is already planning for our 2026 garden! Recently, Lisa provided us with a summary of the 2025 garden season, which encompassed an entire growing season. Below are some of the highlights:
50 classrooms visited to work in/with the garden. Each classroom had the opportunity to participate at least twice.
1,100 seeds were planted and grown indoors under grow lights. 265 of these plants were transplanted into the garden; the remainder were sold via our Community Plant Sale (this year’s plant sale will begin on February 1).
The plant sale provides plants to Lowry Elementary families, neighbors and community members. We brought in $1,225; the earnings funded new garden purchases.
We grew 61 different varieties of edible plants in the garden and harvested 277 pounds of produce. 166 pounds were sold via the student-run Farmers Market, 35 pounds were given to the school cafeteria for the Garden to Cafeteria program, and 76 pounds were donated to Lowry families.
We hosted 6 student-run Farmers Markets in the fall, with each 4th and 5th grade class running a market. The Farmers Markets generated $414 in sales, which was used to fund additional purchases for the garden.
Over the summer, we held garden work days. Each Tuesday morning, teachers, families, and community members came together to help maintain the garden. In addition to the vegetable garden, we also maintained the Outdoor Classroom, Serenity Garden, and entryway planters.
The total cost to operate the garden, Farmers Market and Plant Sale in 2025 was $1,499. These expenses were paid for with revenue from the Farmers Market and Plant Sale. The Lowry PTO managed all of the funds for the garden.
